Find Us at LitFest in The ‘Dena

One of the great pleasures in life is getting to share our love of books with authors, educators, and readers in our community.

That’s what LitFest in the Dena is all about, and this year the Children’s Literature Council of Southern California is teaming up with LitFest to present a panel discussion addressing the national crisis of book banning.

The panel is called: Book Banning & the Gatekeepers: Curation vs. Censorship

The conversation will focus on advocating for intellectual freedom for young people in the areas of :

  • current censorship events in our country and how we can respond

  • the role of creators and advocates vis-à-vis representation, curation, access

  • gatekeeping; and problem solving and resources to support our communities and others.

We’re thrilled to welcome these esteemed and knowledgeable panelists: Ernesto Cisneros (author/educator), Candice Mack (teen services manager, LA Public Library), Sharon Langley (author/educator), and Benson Shum (author). The panel will be moderated by our own, Lynn Kysh, CLCSC president.

We hope you’ll join us for this important conversation at LitFest in the Dena (formerly LitFest Pasadena) on Saturday May 6th at 5pm at the Mountain View Mausoleum in Altadena.

There will be book events through the whole weekend, including other kid lit panels earlier in the day:

  • 2pm: Making a Picture Book: From Process to Publication

With Danielle Davis, Maple Lam, Andrea J. Loney, and Mirelle Ortega. Moderated by Dana Middleton.

  • 3:30pm: Walking Through the Fire: Hope & Resilience in Middle Grade & YA Fiction

With Chris Baron, Julie Buxbaum, Yi Shun Lai, and Sally Pla. Moderated by Margaret Finnegan.

Litfest in the Dena has been serving the Pasadena and Altadena areas as a free, public book festival for over a decade. The festival highlights local authors and diverse voices, including various panels on literature for young people. This year the festival will be held at the beautiful Mountain View Mausoleum in Altadena on May 6-7.
